Protecting Bangladesh’s Indigenous Cattle Heritage

Bangladesh’s livestock heritage is deeply intertwined with its indigenous cattle breeds. Among them, Mir Kadem, North Bengal Gray (NBG), Pabna, Red Chittagong Cattle (RCC) and Hill Black Netrakona stand as living genetic treasures-each uniquely adapted to the agro-ecological diversity of this land. These breeds are not merely biological entities; they are cultural assets, symbols of rural resilience and pillars of traditional farming systems that sustain millions of livelihoods.

At a time when climate change, disease outbreaks and feed scarcity threaten livestock production, the value of these native breeds has never been greater. Their hardiness, heat tolerance, disease resistance and ability to thrive on low-quality feed make them strategic resources for a sustainable livestock future.

Yet their survival and genetic purity are under serious threat. Indiscriminate crossbreeding, unplanned breeding policies, shrinking grazing land and inadequate conservation efforts are contributing to genetic dilution. If this trend continues, Bangladesh could lose genetic traits that have taken centuries to evolve and cannot simply be recreated once lost.

Mir Kadem cattle, recognised by their distinctive white colour, are known for longevity, disease resistance and their ability to thrive under harsh management conditions. Although their milk yield is modest, their heat tolerance and low maintenance requirements make them dependable for marginal farmers. North Bengal Gray cattle, with their elegant grey coat and strong physique, are suited to both draft and dairy purposes. Their ability to survive in the dry Barind tract with limited feed and water, along with resistance to several diseases and parasites, makes them particularly valuable.

Pabna cattle, once renowned as the country's premier dairy breed, have significant historical and economic value. Their calm temperament, moderate milk yield and compatibility with smallholder farming systems offer potential for revival through targeted genetic improvement. Red Chittagong Cattle are distinguished by their bright red coat, superior meat quality, disease resistance and relatively high butterfat content in milk. Hill Black Netrakona, meanwhile, are adapted to hilly and rugged landscapes where other breeds may struggle. Their strong immunity, agility and minimal feed requirements make them suitable for climate-vulnerable regions. Collectively, these five breeds represent an important part of Bangladesh's genetic wealth. They can withstand heat stress, survive periods of feed scarcity and utilise crop residues and other low-quality feed, making them particularly suitable for smallholder farming. Their genetic diversity could also prove invaluable for future breeding, biotechnology research and climate adaptation.

Despite these advantages, indigenous cattle are declining. Their average milk yield of around 1.5 to 2.5 litres per day encourages farmers to favour exotic or crossbred animals promising higher production. Conventional artificial insemination programmes have also often relied on crossbreeding indigenous cows with exotic bulls. While this may produce short-term gains, indiscriminate crossbreeding gradually erodes the genetic identity of native breeds.

Bangladesh therefore faces a difficult challenge: how to improve livestock productivity without sacrificing the genetic resources that can strengthen the sector's resilience.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) offers an important opportunity. Instead of replacing indigenous genetics with exotic ones, IVF can help multiply elite animals within indigenous breeds while preserving their distinctive characteristics. Oocytes can be collected from selected females, fertilised under controlled laboratory conditions, and the resulting embryos transferred to healthy recipient cows. This can enable genetically valuable females to produce far more offspring than through conventional reproduction. For indigenous germplasm, IVF could facilitate the rapid multiplication of elite females, preservation of genetic purity, controlled breeding and faster genetic improvement. It could also generate valuable scientific data for breed registries, genomic databases and evidence-based breeding policies.

However, technology alone cannot solve the problem. Bangladesh needs a coordinated, government-led conservation and improvement programme. State-of-the-art IVF facilities should be established, with specialised training for breeders, laboratory technicians and field veterinarians. A centralised donor-recipient network could connect research institutions, farms and breeding centres, while universities, livestock research organisations and international partners could contribute expertise.

Farmers must remain at the centre of this initiative. Incentives, awareness programmes and technical assistance are necessary to encourage them to preserve and selectively breed native cattle rather than replace them indiscriminately. Such a programme would contribute not only to livestock development but also to climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, rural livelihoods and food security. Bangladesh has an opportunity to demonstrate that modern biotechnology can strengthen rather than undermine traditional genetic resources.

The five indigenous cattle germplasm embody Bangladesh's history, culture and rural strength. As climate change and other pressures intensify, their genetic traits may become increasingly valuable. Their conservation is therefore not only scientifically important but also economically and strategically necessary.

Bangladesh must now move beyond recognising the value of its indigenous cattle and take concrete steps to protect them. By combining traditional knowledge with technologies such as IVF, the country can conserve its precious genetic resources while improving their productivity and economic value.

These cattle are living symbols of Bangladesh’s agricultural heritage. With the right policies, scientific investment and farmer participation, they can also become an important part of the country’s livestock future.
