Tie-break rules set for Class XI admission

The Education Ministry has set subject-wise criteria to determine merit rankings when students have the same GPA and total marks in Class XI admission.
There will be no admission test for Class XI this year. Students will be admitted to colleges based on their SSC and equivalent examination results. If two or more students have the same GPA and total marks, their subject-wise scores will be considered to determine who ranks higher.
The Secondary and Higher Education Division issued the ‘Class XI Admission Policy 2026’ on Monday, setting out the rules for resolving such ties. The policy also provides for priority for students of a school and college seeking admission to its own higher secondary section.
If students have the same GPA, their merit ranking will first be determined by their total marks in the SSC or equivalent examination. If the total marks are also equal, science students will be ranked based on their marks in general mathematics and either higher mathematics or biology. If the tie persists, marks in English, physics and chemistry will be considered successively.
For humanities and business studies students, marks in English, mathematics and Bangla will be considered successively if their GPA and total marks are the same.
For students seeking admission to a different group, the total marks will be considered first, followed by marks in English, mathematics and Bangla.
The policy also gives priority to students of school and college institutions for admission to their respective groups, provided they meet the eligibility requirements. Outside students can be admitted to the remaining seats after the institution’s own students have been accommodated.
Online applications will be accepted from 2 September to 10 September until 8:00 PM. The results of the first phase are scheduled to be published on 17 September, while Class XI classes are expected to begin nationwide on 23 September after completion of the admission process.
Under the policy, 93 per cent of Class XI seats will remain open to all students and will be filled based on merit. Of the remaining 7 per cent, 5 per cent will be reserved for sons and daughters of freedom fighters and martyred freedom fighters, while 2 per cent will be reserved for children of officials and employees of the Education Ministry and its subordinate offices.
The application fee has been set at Tk 220 per student. Each student can choose a minimum of five and a maximum of 10 colleges in order of preference.
The ministry has also instructed institutions not to charge students any fees beyond the prescribed amount and not to withhold their original transcripts or mark sheets.
