Measles death toll hits 943 as 5 more die

Five more children died of measles-like symptoms in the past 24 hours, from 8am Monday to 8am Tuesday, taking the total number of deaths from the disease and its symptoms to 943 since March 15.

Meanwhile, 1,077 were affected by measles and measles-like symptoms during the 24-hour period. Of them, 91 were diagnosed with measles, while 986 showed measles-like symptoms.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the figures in its measles-related report released on Tuesday.

Five children have died in the last 24 hours, one from Sylhet divisions while four other died in Dhaka division, due to measles symptoms. However, there are no deaths related to measles at this time.

Since March 15, a total of 844 deaths have been reported among people with measles-like symptoms, while 99 people have died after being diagnosed with measles, according to the DGHS.

Data from the health directorate showed that 151,638 have developed measles-like symptoms since March 15 this year. During the same period, measles was diagnosed in 18,578, bringing the total number of people affected by measles and measles-like symptoms to 170,216.

Since March 15, a total of 132,554 with measles-like symptoms have been admitted to hospitals, while 127,811 patients have been discharged.
