Two children found dead in Dinajpur

DINAJPUR, Aug 27: The bodies of two children who drowned while bathing in the Atrai River at Bhushir Bandar in Dinajpur Sadar Upazila have been recovered.

The deceased were Sharmi Islam, 12, a class seven student and daughter of Shafiqul Islam, and Brishti, 10, a class five student and daughter of Babul. Both were from Harga Village in Sundarban Union No. 2 of the upazila.

Brishti’s body was recovered at about 5:30 am on Thursday from Jhanjira Firingir Ghat, about 5 kilometres from the site. Sharmi’s body was recovered from the scene at about 8 pm on Wednesday.

Former chairman of neighbouring Sundarpur Union Nasirul Islam said three girls went to the Atrai River near a sluice gate at Bhushir Bandar Beguntara Village around 2:30 pm on Wednesday to bathe. 

One managed to swim ashore, while the other two drowned. Locals searched the river but could not find them. Later, Dinajpur Fire Service and divers from Rangpur recovered the bodies.

Officer-in-Charge of Dinajpur Kotwali Police Station Mohammad Nur Nabi confirmed the recovery of the bodies.
