Opposition MPs walk out of Parliament after saluting Speaker

Opposition lawmakers walked out of the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday night after Opposition Leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman announced that they would no longer participate in the ongoing discussion over parliamentary proceedings.
The walkout came around 8:00pm when the House began the legislative business on the day’s agenda. Dr Shafiqur Rahman sought permission to speak and, with the approval of Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaisar Kamal, raised the opposition’s objections to the ongoing parliamentary process, particularly the formation of the Constitutional Amendment Committee, implementation of the July National Charter and the referendum verdict.
He said the core demands for reform could not be suppressed and that the opposition remained firmly committed to comprehensive reforms and implementation of the referendum verdict. He also questioned the process through which the Constitutional Amendment Committee was formed, arguing that parliamentary procedures had not been properly followed.
“The implementation of the referendum is what we want. We do not want to be part of any fragmented process in this way,” he said.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman then announced that the opposition would not participate in the discussion at this stage. He said they were leaving Parliament for the time being and would return at an appropriate time to speak on behalf of the people.
He also referred to four notices submitted by the opposition concerning public interest and public sufferings, expressing hope that Parliament would provide an opportunity to discuss them.
At the end of his speech, the opposition leader thanked the Deputy Speaker for allowing him to speak. He then addressed the Deputy Speaker with “Assalamu Alaikum” and announced the walkout before leaving the chamber along with other opposition MPs.
The opposition had also walked out of Parliament on July 13 over its objections to the process of constitutional reform and implementation of the July National Charter.
