Special unit formed to recover illegal weapons

A special unit comprising members of different intelligence agencies has been formed to recover looted and illegal weapons across the country, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Saturday.

The minister disclosed the information while speaking to journalists at Bangladesh Police Headquarters in Rajarbagh.

He said special operations would also be carried out with the support of intelligence agencies to curb illegal weapons, drugs, smuggling and extortion.

Salahuddin said rewards of up to Tk 200,000 would be offered for information leading to the recovery of looted and illegal weapons.

Those providing information leading to the recovery of pistols, revolvers or shotguns will receive Tk 50,000, while rewards ranging from Tk 10,000 to Tk 20,000 will be offered for information on other looted weapons and equipment, depending on their type.

He said the identities of informants would be kept confidential.

The minister said cases had already been filed over firearms whose licences were cancelled but were not surrendered within the stipulated time. Operations to recover those weapons are continuing, he added.

He said police officers had also been given specific deadlines to show progress in curbing terrorism, extortion and drug-related crimes.

Officials failing to meet the expected targets within the stipulated time would face strict legal and administrative action, he warned.

Special operations against illegal weapons, drugs, smuggling and extortion will continue across the country, with support from intelligence agencies.
