
KULAURA, MOULVIBAZAR, Aug 29: A discussion and prize-giving ceremony was held in Kulaura Upazila of Moulvibazar on Saturday to mark Shaheed Rumi Day.
The event was organised by Shaheed Rumi Smriti Parishad at Hira-Guljan Academy and Junior High School in Sripur Madrasabazar.
Muktakuri Open Scout Group Secretary Md Billal Hossain moderated the programme, with the school's Head Teacher Md Enamul Haque Chowdhury attending it as the chief guest.
Sadiah Noshin Tasnim, Adviser to Shaheed Rumi Smriti Parishad; Sadman Soumik Majumder, member secretary of BASD (Marxist), Kulaura Upazila unit; members Sumon Deb and Nurul Islam Faisal; teacher Sanjoy Debnath; and Md Sadekuzzaman, Vice-President of Sripur Bazar Traders Welfare Association, attended as special guests.
Speakers said Shaheed Rumi was an inspiring symbol of patriotism, courage and sacrifice, and his dedication to the country remained an example for the younger generation.
They stressed the need to acquaint young people with Rumi's life and ideals.
A commemorative bookmark featuring excerpts from Rumi's widely remembered words to his mother, Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam, was also displayed at the event.
Later, prizes were distributed among the winners of a quiz competition organised to mark Shaheed Rumi Day. Students and people from different professions in the locality attended the programme.
Shaheed Rumi was the eldest son of Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam and a guerrilla fighter in the Liberation War. He was captured by Pakistani forces on August 29, 1971, and never returned. August 30 is observed as the day of his disappearance. Shaheed Rumi Day is observed annually to commemorate his sacrifice and uphold the spirit of the Liberation War.
