DIGHINALA, KHAGRACHHARI, Aug 29: Several low-lying areas in Dighinala Upazila of the district were flooded for the third time in a month following incessant heavy rain and upstream runoff on Friday night.

Low-lying areas of Merung, Kabakhali and Boalkhali unions were inundated, causing temporary disruption to road communication between Dighinala and Longdu.

In Merung Union, the road and the Bacha Merung Steel Bridge area went underwater, disrupting traffic on the Dighinala-Longdu route.
However, road communication between Dighinala and Sajek remained normal as water levels were still low near the cemetery adjacent to Maini Bridge in Kabakhali Union.

Mohammad Anisur Rahman, a resident of Merung Union, said the Bacha Merung Steel Bridge and adjoining road go underwater whenever there is heavy rain upstream.

“We suffer greatly as movement becomes difficult. We have to use boats to travel,” he said.
Kabakhali Union Parishad Chairman Knowledge Chakma Gyan said several areas of the union were flooded after continuous heavy rain on Friday night, with water entering homes.

Seven families have taken shelter at Pablakhali Government Primary School, and arrangements are being made to provide them with food, he said.

“Those whose homes have started to be inundated have been advised to move to shelters,” the chairman added.
Dighinala Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tanzil Parvez said several low-lying areas of Kabakhali, Boalkhali and Merung unions were flooded due to heavy rain and hill runoff from upstream.

Twenty people from seven families in Kabakhali Union have taken shelter at an evacuation centre, he said, adding that the Union Parishad was initially providing them with food.
