Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has joined Chelsea after ending his six-year spell with Aston Villa in a reported £7.5 million move.
Martinez left Arsenal for Aston Villa in 2020. During his time at Villa, he made 255 appearances and featured in all three UEFA competitions.
His final appearance for Aston Villa came in the Europa League, when he played through the match while taking painkillers despite suffering a broken finger.
Villa have signed Zayn Suzuki from Parma as Martinez’s replacement. Suzuki had initially been expected to join Italian club Juventus, but the move fell through.
Martinez had previously considered leaving Aston Villa in search of a new challenge. Villa manager Unai Emery praised the goalkeeper’s contribution to the club and said the team would begin the new season with their new goalkeeper.
