A fire broke out at the food plaza area of Kolkata’s Sealdah Railway Station on Monday morning, triggering panic among passengers. No casualties were reported.

The fire sent thick black smoke across the station premises, prompting passengers and food plaza workers to rush to safety. The Government Railway Police (GRP) alerted the fire service after being informed about the incident.

Three fire engines reached the spot and brought the blaze under control.

The fire reportedly started suddenly at the food plaza outside the station. As several food shops are located nearby, there were concerns that the flames could spread to other establishments containing flammable materials.

Fire officials said they initially suspect that a short circuit caused the fire.

The incident comes days after a devastating fire at Shikha Inn, a residential hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in Kolkata, on August 19. Nine people, including seven Bangladeshi tourists, were killed in that fire.
