Director General of Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party (Ansar-VDP) Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud paid a courtesy call on President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at Bangabhaban on Tuesday.
According to a press release issued by Bangladesh Ansar and VDP, the meeting discussed the force's overall activities, ongoing development and modernisation initiatives, and future plans.
The Ansar-VDP director general congratulated President Fakhrul on assuming office and briefed him on the force's welfare, development and modernisation programmes.
The President praised the role of Ansar-VDP members in maintaining public security and carrying out various state responsibilities following the mass uprising, including their duties during the 13th national parliamentary election.
He stressed the need to further enhance the force's professionalism, discipline and engagement with the public in maintaining peace, security and order.
Describing Ansar-VDP as the country's largest people-oriented security and discipline force, the President said its members had long played an important role in national security, public safety and social stability.
He emphasised the continuation of modernisation and efforts to strengthen the force's organisational capacity to make its role in national security and public welfare more effective.
The President also recalled the contributions of former President Ziaur Rahman to reforms of the Ansar force, including the establishment of Ansar Battalions and the VDP, according to the press release. He also recalled former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia's role in the modernisation of the force, the enactment of various laws and the establishment of the Ansar-VDP Unnayan Bank.
President Fakhrul stressed the need to expand foreign language, technical and technological training to improve the skills and employment prospects of Ansar-VDP members.
He also praised the force's achievements in solar power generation, human resource development, sports and cultural activities, as well as its various public-oriented initiatives.
The President assured continued support for the overall development of Ansar-VDP, strengthening its organisational capacity and ensuring the welfare of its members.
During the meeting, the Ansar-VDP director general invited the President to visit the Ansar Academy at a convenient time and expressed his commitment to making the force more people-oriented, modern, skilled and effective.
Secretaries to the President and other senior officials concerned were present at the meeting.
