Dengue claims 14 lives in 3 days

Bangladesh has recorded four more deaths from dengue and 1,252 new hospital admissions.

The figures, released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday, cover the 24 hours to 8am and take the number of dengue deaths in the first three days of Sept to 14.

A total of 3,586 people have been hospitalised with the mosquito-borne disease during the period.

The DGHS said two people died in hospitals in areas covered by Dhaka’s two city corporations, while one death each was reported in Chattogram and Khulna divisions between 8am Wednesday and 8am Thursday.

Of the 1,252 new patients admitted nationwide during the same period, 101 were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka North City Corporation and 135 in Dhaka South City Corporation.

Another 227 patients were admitted to hospitals elsewhere in Dhaka Division.

Among other divisions, 119 patients were admitted in Barishal, 194 in Chattogram, 247 in Khulna, 87 in Mymensingh, 109 in Rajshahi, 27 in Rangpur and six in Sylhet.

A total of 1,034 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals during the same 24-hour period.

According to the DGHS, 39,532 people have been hospitalised with dengue across Bangladesh since Jan 1 this year. Of them, 36,367 have recovered and been discharged.

The health directorate has maintained records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000.

In 2023, Bangladesh recorded its highest annual number of dengue hospitalisations, with 321,179 patients admitted.

That year also saw the country’s highest number of dengue deaths, at 1,705.

Last year, more than 400 people died from dengue, while around 102,000 cases were recorded.

The DGHS has reported 111 dengue deaths so far this year.�"bdnews24
