The government has offered tax exemption to maintain the availability and stability of prices in the domestic market for green chillies and tomatoes in Bangladesh.
It shall apply from the date of the notification of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) until 60 days later.
In the initial period of 30 days, the exemption will cover custom duty of more than 5% on its assessable value, the whole regulatory duty, and custom duty of more than 10%. In the following period of 30 days, it will cover custom duty of more than 5% and the whole regulatory duty.
Green chillies now cost Tk 80-160 and tomatoes Tk 120-180 per kg in Dhaka markets.
Businessmen said that heavy rains during this period have caused loss of produce, leading to increased prices of vegetables while tomato prices are higher due to being a winter vegetable.
