Don’t make music for something: james’ message to the next generation

Legendary Bangladeshi rock musician Nagarbaul James has urged the next generation of musicians to pursue music out of passion and dedication rather than expecting material rewards in return.
James made the remarks at a press conference held ahead of his upcoming concert in Sweden, where he is currently touring as part of a two-month European musical tour. He has already performed in Portugal, England, Cyprus and Italy and is scheduled to perform for expatriate Bangladeshis in Sweden on September 6.
Speaking about his message to young musicians, James said artists should enter the world of music because of their love and passion for it.
“You have to sing out of passion, out of addiction. If someone does music in the hope of getting something in return, I would say, stop now,” he said.
James also emphasized that music should primarily be a source of personal fulfillment and peace.
“I think it is not right to do music to get anything. You have to do music for your own peace. If you achieve something through it, that is a different matter. Even if I didn't get anything today, I would still be singing,” he said.
The rock icon said he intends to continue performing for as long as he lives, regardless of the size of his audience.
“I have no specific future plans for music. I will sing, I want to sing until the end. Even if I see that there is only one audience at the end, I will sing for them too,” James said.
James began his musical journey in the early 1980s as the guitarist and vocalist of the Chattogram-based band Feelings. The band released its debut album, Station Road, in 1987. Over the decades, James has established himself as one of Bangladesh’s most influential rock musicians, with his songs continuing to resonate with multiple generations.
Reflecting on his long career, James said he does not feel that the audience has changed significantly over the years.
“Whenever I stand on stage, it seems like everyone is the same audience as before. In the meantime, I didn't notice that time is passing and generations are changing. Now I feel like I can make many generations listen to my songs,” he said.
James’ European tour will conclude with his Sweden concert. He will then travel to Australia, where he is scheduled to perform alongside West Bengal singer Rupam Islam at a special concert in New South Wales on September 12.
