Remembering the unforgettable ATM Shamsuzzaman

ATM Shamsuzzaman, the famous versatile Bangladeshi actor and distinguished dialogue speaker who is celebrated with great honor every year on his birth anniversary, is being remembered today, September 10, on his birthday.

Abu Taher Mohammad Shamsuzzaman, who was born on September 10, 1941, in Daulatpur, Noakhali, was born to his maternal grandfather’s house and was the eldest son of five brothers and three sisters. His father Nuruzzaman was a well-known lawyer and politician and belonged to Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq’s circle.

ATM Shamsuzzaman started his film career in 1965 in a film named Noya Jindagani; however, this movie was never released. His screen debut was in 1968 in Etotuku Asha in the role of a newspaper seller.

He was very famous for playing roles of villains, comedians, and supporting actors in films such as Lathiyal, Nayanmoni, Jadur Banshi, Ramer Sumoti and Hajar Bochor Dhore, where his performance helped him to become a famous villain.

Apart from acting, he was a story writer and screenwriter. He also wrote the story and screenplay of Jolchobi where the film debut of actor Farooque took place.

There were many achievements of ATM Shamsuzzaman throughout his career in the film industry. He won the National Film Award for Best Actor in the year 1987 for Dayi Ke? and subsequently won another award for Best Comedian for Madam Fuli, Churiwala and Mon Bose Na Porar Tebile. Another award he won was for Best Supporting Actor for Chorabali.

Ebadat was ATM Shamsuzzaman’s debut film as a director in the year 2009, where he starred along with Shabnur and Riaz. ATM Shamsuzzaman also won a special award for his role in Guerilla.
