Power generation deficits across Bangladesh surged past 3,550 megawatts (MW) on Thursday (September 10) following the sudden shutdown of a unit at Adani's power plant alongside disruptions at the RNPL facility, triggering severe nationwide loadshedding amid an ongoing heatwave.

The simultaneous mechanical failures introduced a fresh deficit of 1,200 MW to the national grid, compounding existing supply constraints caused by rising temperatures driven by a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal.

Data from Thursday afternoon indicated a national supply deficit of 3,557 MW, signaling the most acute power shortage recorded this season. Total demand was pegged at 16,345 MW - at least 1,000 MW lower than peak seasonal projections - while actual generation hovered around 12,788 MW.

"Unit shutdowns at Adani and RNPL occurred suddenly, creating an immediate 1,200 MW deficit," confirmed Johurul Islam, Member (Generation) of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). "Technical teams at Adani are working to restore operations rapidly alongside efforts to clear existing systemic issues."

Data analysis reveals that power imports from Adani dropped sharply from 1,430 MW to 758 MW on Wednesday night. Total coal-fired power output plummeted to 4,857 MW, down from 5,200 MW recorded the previous day.

In addition to coal-fired disruptions, technical faults forced several gas-fired plants offline. Ashuganj Power Station's 450 MW unit - which generated 319 MW a day prior - tripped due to technical glitches.

Persistent natural gas shortages have also forced at least seven power plants in the Dhaka region to shut down or operate under reduced capacity, with additional plants offline across Chittagong, Cumilla, and Mymensingh.

The escalating supply deficit has reactivated widespread loadshedding across the country. Major urban centers are experiencing up to four power outages daily, while rural areas report recurring outages lasting between seven and 10 hours.
