Saudi Arabia shuts key oil pipeline after Iraq drone attack

Saudi Arabia has temporarily shut down its East-West oil pipeline after drones launched from Iraq attacked the facility, causing injuries and damage.

The Saudi Energy Ministry said the pipeline was closed as a precaution following the attacks on Thursday. The 1,200-kilometre pipeline carries oil from the kingdom’s eastern fields to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, bypassing the Strait of Hormuz.

Iraq has launched an investigation into the attacks and dismissed a senior military commander responsible for operations in Maysan province, where the drones reportedly originated. The province shares a border with Iran.

The pipeline has become particularly important since the war between Iran and the United States disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. It had been carrying around 4 million to 5 million barrels of oil per day, equivalent to 4 to 5 per cent of global supply, according to Reuters.

Saudi Arabia initially prepared to retaliate but decided against taking military action after Iraq’s prime minister requested time to prevent further attacks from Iraqi territory. Riyadh said it would support Baghdad’s efforts while reserving the right to take necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and critical facilities.

The Saudi government has not publicly identified those responsible for the attacks.
