Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman has condemned the arrest of freedom fighter Major (retd) Mohammad Akhteruzzaman for protesting alleged irregularities and passenger suffering at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
In a social media post on Sunday, Shafiqur said the authorities should have taken steps to correct the alleged irregularities instead of arresting Akhteruzzaman.
He said Akhteruzzaman had become a voice of protest for airport passengers, particularly expatriates returning from abroad.
The Jamaat amir also alleged that steps had been taken to publicly humiliate Akhteruzzaman, a two-time former member of parliament and a freedom fighter.
The statement said Akhteruzzaman had shown courage by protesting against injustice and corruption and had won a place in the hearts of people affected by such problems.
Shafiqur prayed to Allah for Akhteruzzaman’s increased honour.
