Dear Sir,
A university is not merely a place for academic classes, examinations or degrees; it is also a space for knowledge, intellectual growth and creative thinking. However, the reading culture, along with discussions and leisure time spent in libraries, is gradually declining.
One major reason is the excessive use of mobile phones and social media, which is weakening students’ reading habits. Academic pressure and exam-oriented study are also making campus spaces less lively. Like migratory birds, intellectual gatherings once returned regularly, but such lively discussions are now rarely seen.
Open reading rooms, book corners, regular book fairs, exhibitions, reading circles and book exchanges could revive students’ interest and broaden learning opportunities.
Reading is not only about examination results. It strengthens reasoning, language skills, historical awareness, imagination, artistic sensibility and humanity. Universities should therefore take meaningful steps to restore this culture.
