Family Card a safeguard for women: Culture minister

The Family Card programme will help ensure women’s economic security and empowerment and serve as a safeguard against various forms of family abuse, Culture Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury has said.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at a law and order committee meeting at the Chuadanga Deputy Commissioner’s conference room on Sunday.

Nitai Roy Chowdhury said an economically independent woman can help make her entire family self-reliant. He said the government was providing Family Cards to empower women and strengthen their economic security.

“The main objective of the programme is to stand by genuinely disadvantaged people,” he said.

Referring to the Agriculture Card, the minister said the government had introduced the initiative for farmers and waived agricultural loans of up to Tk 10,000, including interest.

Speaking about violence against women, he said women, particularly in rural areas, were often subjected to various forms of abuse and pressure by male family members, including demands for dowry or money from their parental homes.

“In such circumstances, the Family Card will work as a safeguard for women,” he said.

He said hardworking women could save the Tk 2,500 received through the programme and use it to help make their families self-reliant.

The meeting was chaired by Chuadanga Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Lutfun Nahar.

Reserved women’s MP Newaz Halima Arli, Chuadanga District BNP General Secretary and District Council Administrator Sharifuzzaman Sharif, and Police Superintendent Md Ruhul Kabir Khan were present as special guests.

District Civil Surgeon Dr Hadi Ziauddin Ahmed, the UNOs of the district’s four upazilas, Department of Agricultural Extension Deputy Director Md Nurul Islam, Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection Assistant Director Mamunul Hasan and other government officials also attended the meeting.
