NARAYANGANJ, Sept 13: A Narayanganj court sentenced seven people to life-term imprisonment for strangling garments official Sakhawat Hossain Shubhra to death and throwing his body from a rooftop to make the killing look like an accident.
The court also fined each convict Tk 50,000, in default of which they will have to serve two more years in jail.
Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Md Abu Shamim Azad pronounced the verdict around noon. Five convicts were present in court, while two were absconding.
The convicts are Babul Saha Jibon, 42, Nazmul Islam, 37, Sanjoy Das, 39, Milon, 41, Bashir, 40, Samir Chandra Mondal, 39, and Kawsar, 43.
According to Public Prosecutor Advocate Abul Kalam Azad Zakir, Shubhra worked at Plummy Fashions, an export-oriented garments factory in Uttar Narsingpur.
On August 15, 2017, Jibon called Shubhra and took him to the seventh floor of a 12-storey building under construction in Masdair. Six others were there.
The accused allegedly beat Shubhra on the head, strangled him and threw his body from the seventh floor.
Later, Bashir and Samir left the body at Khanpur's 300-bed hospital to make the incident appear different, the PP said. CCTV footage captured them leaving the body there.
Shubhra's father filed a case with Fatullah Police Station. After investigation, police submitted a charge-sheet against the seven.
Of 33 prosecution witnesses, 29 testified before the court.
