The government has formed a seven-member committee, headed by the attorney general, to determine legal measures for collecting taxes and duties from assets allegedly siphoned abroad and subsequently frozen or seized under court orders.

The Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification in this regard on Sunday.

The committee has been tasked with determining the necessary legal and other measures for recovering government taxes and duties from frozen or attached bank accounts and other assets linked to funds allegedly laundered abroad.

It will also recommend effective steps for implementing the measures and ensuring the recovery of the dues.

According to the notification, the attorney general of Bangladesh will serve as convener of the committee.

The other members are the additional secretary of the Central and Commercial Banking wing of the Financial Institutions Division; the director general (Money Laundering) of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC); the head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU); the director general of the National Board of Revenue’s (NBR) Central Intelligence Cell (CIC); and the deputy inspector general of the Organised Crime Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bangladesh Police.

The committee will assess what legal and other steps are required to collect taxes and duties from assets transferred abroad that have been frozen or attached by court order.

It will subsequently formulate recommendations on how those measures should be implemented and what effective action should be taken to facilitate the recovery of the government’s dues.
