Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray led a major protest march in Mumbai on Sunday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The march, titled ‘Virat Garjana Morcha’, began at Metro Cinema and passed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters. Senior leaders of the Congress and Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) also joined the protest.
The Thackeray brothers alleged that the election process had been undermined and questioned because of the chief election commissioner. They also demanded the immediate cancellation of the SIR exercise.
Addressing thousands of supporters, Raj Thackeray called for the SIR process to be scrapped in Maharashtra and said voting should return to ballot papers instead of electronic voting machines.
He also questioned the removal of a large number of names from the electoral rolls following the revision, saying there could not be such a sudden decline in the number of voters.
Uddhav Thackeray accused the chief election commissioner of taking away people's right to vote. He also questioned how many Bangladeshis had actually been identified if removing Bangladeshis from electoral rolls was the purpose of the SIR exercise.
