Yemen’s Saudi-backed government announced the start of a major military operation against Iran-backed Houthi forces on Sunday (October 4), aiming to retake territory controlled by the group.
Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi made the announcement in a televised address, saying the operation would seek to restore government control over the remaining territory and extend the authority of state institutions across the country.
The announcement marks a major escalation in Yemen’s long-running conflict between the internationally recognised government and the Iran-aligned Houthis, who control large parts of the country.
