Regent’s Sahed shown arrested in money laundering case

A Dhaka court on Monday showed Regent Hospital Chairman Mohammad Sahed Karim arrested in a money laundering case filed over allegedly acquiring Tk 71.87 lakh in illegal assets.

Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun passed the order following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Sahed’s lawyer Dabir Uddin sought his bail, but the court did not hear the petition.

According to the case documents, the ACC filed the case on March 7, 2021, against Sahed and his wife, Sadia Arbi. After an investigation, the ACC submitted a charge sheet against them on January 10, 2024.

The chargesheet says Sadia declared assets worth Tk 61.30 lakh, while investigators found assets worth Tk 78.23 lakh, including family expenses. Her known income was only Tk 4.50 lakh, leaving Tk 73.53 lakh in assets allegedly beyond her known sources of income.

The ACC alleged that Sadia had no reliable independent source of income and that Sahed helped transfer, convert and conceal money allegedly obtained through illegal and corrupt means.

Sahed, who has been convicted in several fraud and forgery cases, is currently in jail in connection with multiple cases and arrest warrants. He was recently shown arrested in a loan-default and cheque dishonour case filed by Mercantile Cooperative Bank and sent to jail after being sentenced to one year in prison and fined.
