Speaker criticises India's invitation to PM for BRICS summit

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has criticised India for not inviting Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to the BRICS summit with due recognition as the head of government, saying Bangladesh wants a relationship with India based on mutual respect and equality.
He made the remarks while responding to journalists' questions at the Bhola Circuit House on Monday.
“India has not yet invited our prime minister with due respect as a prime minister,” he said.
The speaker said Bangladesh wanted friendly relations with India, but had yet to see any visible steps from New Delhi indicating a similar intention. He also criticised India for sheltering former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and allowing her to engage in politics from there, saying such conduct was not that of a good neighbour.
“We do not want a husband-wife relationship. We want the relationship that should exist between two sovereign states on the basis of equal dignity,” Hafiz Uddin said.
He added that Bangladesh wanted to maintain friendly relations with all countries.
The speaker praised the government's initiatives and reform efforts, saying Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had formed the government with strong public support and a majority in parliament.
He said the government, which was only seven months old, would need time to overcome the crises of the past 17 years.
Regarding reforms, Hafiz Uddin said both the government and the opposition were committed to implementing the July Charter. He said necessary laws and constitutional amendments could be enacted quickly if parliament reached consensus on the reform proposals.
