Houthis strike Saudi air base with drones, ballistic missiles

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed they launched several drones and ballistic missiles at Saudi military facilities on Monday ( September 14 ), saying the operation was carried out in response to Saudi airstrikes in Yemen.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group targeted hangars, radar systems, runways and ammunition depots at King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait. He claimed the strikes caused significant damage to the facilities.

Ahead of the reported attack, Saudi Civil Defence authorities issued warnings in Khamis Mushait and Abha. A resident of Khamis Mushait told AFP that he heard loud explosions, followed by a fire that continued to burn for a considerable time.

Saree alleged that Saudi Arabia had carried out more than 300 airstrikes in Yemen over the past five days, with attacks launched from the Khamis Mushait and Taif air bases.

The latest claims come amid renewed tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia. The Iran-aligned group has maintained control over parts of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline and strengthened its position around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key maritime route linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
