Sacked Islami Bank staff block Ctg-Cox’s Bazar highway

Sacked officials and employees of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC staged protests and blocked the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway in Karnaphuli on Monday (September 14), demanding reinstatement.
They first held a rally and brought out a procession in Jamal Khan around 5:00 PM. Later, they blocked the highway near the southern end of the Karnaphuli Third Bridge around 6:30 PM, disrupting traffic on the busy route.
The blockade caused severe congestion, with many passengers forced to walk through the affected area. Protesters also chanted slogans against Jamaat-e-Islami and demanded justice over an alleged attack on their peaceful programme in Dhaka earlier in the day.
The protesters claimed they had been unlawfully dismissed and said they blocked the highway to press for their reinstatement.
The blockade ended around 8:15 PM, Karnaphuli Police Station OC Nur Ahmad said.
“The protesters have ended their programme and left. Traffic movement has resumed. We are working to ease the congestion,” he told.
The protest followed a clash in Dhaka between the sacked Islami Bank employees and members of the Jamaat-backed ‘Conscious Customers Forum’ near the bank’s head office in Dilkusha.
The two groups exchanged arguments before getting involved in a physical altercation in the presence of police. The sacked employees later left the area, while the customer group moved to the Bangladesh Bank premises.
The ‘Conscious Customers Forum’ has been campaigning since May for the reconstitution of the bank’s board.
