The deceased was identified as Mohammad Abul Hossain, 46, a manager of Janata Bank.
Police recovered his body from Flat 6/B of Imperial Arkit Bhaban in Khorshedbagh Residential Area around the morning.
According to the case statement filed by his wife Sharmin Akter with Halishahar Police Station, Abul Hossain and his wife went to sleep in separate rooms at around 1am after having dinner.
Early in the morning, Sharmin got up for Fajr prayers and found her husband hanging from a ceiling fan with a sheet wrapped around his neck. Family members later brought him down and informed the national emergency service 999.
Police went to the spot, prepared a preliminary report and sent the body to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
In the note, Abul Hossain reportedly mentioned that he had been facing financial difficulties as he was unable to recover money owed by several businessmen.
He also referred to a recent CR case filed against him and several colleagues in connection with a cheque-related incident in 2021, when he was serving as manager of Janata Bank’s Laldighi branch.
According to the note, he claimed he was innocent in the incident and had been unable to sleep properly for the past two to three weeks after learning about the case.
At the end of the note, he requested family members to take care of his children and asked that no one be held responsible for his death. He also apologised to everyone.
Halishahar Police Station Sub-Inspector Mosharraf Hossain confirmed the recovery of the body.
He said police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and examining the recovered note before taking further legal action.
