Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said intelligence information was available about the banned Awami League’s procession in Gulshan last Friday.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting at the Home Ministry in the Secretariat on Tuesday, he said the banned Awami League occasionally carries out such activities with small groups of people.

He said some members of the party had been staging small processions after Fajr prayers and recording videos of them.

Regarding the Gulshan incident, Salahuddin said some people gathered around 11am, saying they would attend Friday prayers, but action was later taken against them.

“We had intelligence information,” he said, adding that police might not have anticipated that they would gather in the area under the pretext of attending Friday prayers.

The home minister rejected suggestions that the incident reflected a failure by police, saying authorities took action afterwards.

On Friday, September 11, activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations brought out a procession in an alley beside KFC on Road 3 in Gulshan around 11:45am.
