NCP leader suspended over alleged bribe for family cards

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has temporarily suspended its Netrokona leader who was detained by police over allegations of taking money from people by promising to arrange Family Cards.

The decision was announced in a letter signed by NCP Office Cell member Sadia Farzin Dina on Wednesday.

The suspended leader, Sadia Akter, is the organising secretary of the Netrokona district convening committee and a bachelor’s student at Netrokona Government College.

NCP central committee member and Netrokona district member secretary Fahim Rahman Khan Pathan confirmed the decision. He said Sadia was also asked to explain her position within three working days.

According to the letter, Sadia was suspended from her organisational post over allegations of “serious violation of organisational discipline” following instructions from NCP Convener Nahid Islam and Member Secretary Akhter Hossain.

She was also asked to submit a written explanation and supporting documents to the party’s northern chief organiser Sarjis Alam within three working days.

Sadia was detained from the Kurpar area of Netrokona town on September 8. Police said she allegedly collected Tk 15,000 from five local residents by promising to arrange Family Cards for them.

A case was filed against her the same day and she was sent to jail by a court. She was later released after securing bail.
