Dhaka-Cox's Bazar route to get another train

The Dhaka-Cox's Bazar route is set to get another train, with Bangladesh Railway planning to extend the Mohanagar Express, currently operating between Dhaka and Chattogram, to Cox's Bazar from the first week of October.

Railway Eastern Zone Chief Commercial Manager Sujit Biswas confirmed the plan on Wednesday, saying the route has high passenger demand and existing trains operate with full seats.

The Mohanagar Express currently leaves Kamalapur Railway Station in Dhaka at 9:20 PM for Chattogram, reaching the port city at around 3:30 AM. It stops at 12 stations, including Dhaka Airport.

The planned service will run from Dhaka to Cox's Bazar via Chattogram, with stops at the stations currently served by the Mohanagar Express. These include Narsingdi, Bhairab Bazar, Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria, Akhaura, Kasba, Cumilla, Laksham, Nangalkot, Feni and Kumira, besides Dhaka Airport.

This will allow passengers from Dhaka, Chattogram and the intermediate stations to travel directly to Cox's Bazar on the extended service.

Under the proposed new timetable, train Nos 721 and 722 will leave Kamalapur at 8:30 PM and reach Cox's Bazar at 6:00 AM. The return train will leave Cox's Bazar at 9:00 AM and reach Dhaka at 6:30 PM.

Railway officials said preparations are under way to launch the extended service, which could begin next month.

Earlier on August 1, Railway State Minister Habibur Rashid said the number of trains operating on the Dhaka and Chattogram-Cox's Bazar routes would be increased in response to passenger demand.

Currently, four pairs of trains operate to Cox's Bazar from Dhaka and Chattogram. Railway authorities plan to increase the number to five pairs.

Commercial train services on the Dhaka-Cox's Bazar route began on December 1, 2023. Currently, two pairs of non-stop intercity trains operate between Dhaka and Cox's Bazar, while two pairs of intercity trains, Prabal and Saikat Express, operate between Chattogram and Cox's Bazar.

Railway Eastern Zone Chief Operating Superintendent Shafiqul Rahman said preparations were under way to extend the Mohanagar Express to Cox's Bazar and that the service could begin next month.
