Separate courts on Tuesday sentenced two people to death and three to life imprisonment for separate murder incidents in Rangamati and Madaripur districts and another to life imprisonment for rape in Tangail District.

RANGAMATI: A court in the district sentenced two men to death on Tuesday for the 2017 murder of 56-year-old Shanti Lal Chakma in Sajek, including his 22-year-old son, Sohel Chakma, and nephew Alomoy Chakma, 32. Both were also fined Tk 50,000.

Rangamati District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ahsan Tarek delivered the verdict, finding the charges proven beyond reasonable doubt.

According to the case record, the accused lured Shanti Lal Chakma from his home in Uttar Bhaibon Chhara on August 6, 2017, then strangled him with a scarf and killed him with a machete before dumping his body in the Gangaram River. Police recovered the decomposed body from the Kachalong River nine days later.

Alomoy, who is absconding, will face execution if arrested or surrenders. Sohel, who is in custody, was ordered to be sent to the district jail with the death warrant.

MADARIPUR: A court has sentenced three brothers to life imprisonment and another to seven years of rigorous imprisonment in the 2014 murder of Sekandar Ali Howlader of Rajoir Upazila in the district.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Nahidur Rahman Nahid of the Madaripur First Court declared the verdict on Tuesday afternoon. The court also fined each convict Tk 10,000.

Those sentenced to life imprisonment are Liton Howlader, Titon Howlader and Bachchu Howlader, sons of Gafur Howlader of Basabari in Rajoir. Gafur’s son Atiyar Howlader was sentenced to seven years. Fourteen other accused were acquitted after the charges against them were not proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The convicts have been absconding since securing bail.

According to the prosecution, Sekandar was returning home with his nephew Kamrul Howlader after Maghrib prayers on July 5, 2014, when Liton, Bachchu, Titon and others attacked him with locally made weapons at Basabari Bridge. He later died at Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

His brother, Ilias Howlader, filed a murder case on July 6 of that year. CID Inspector Sirajul Islam submitted the charge sheet on December 30, 2016.

TANGAIL: Judge Dr Abdul Majid of Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on Tuesday afternoon sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a child and also fined him Tk 2 lakh, in default, sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment.

The convicted Rashid Mia, 55, is the son of Golam of Agchhawali Village in Mahera Union of Mirzapur Upazila of the district.
