Ronaldo remains Portugal squad under new coach

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named in Portugal’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures, as head coach Jorge Jesus unveiled his first squad since taking charge of the national team.

The 41-year-old forward remains a key part of Portugal’s plans as the European champions begin their Nations League title defence.

Ronaldo’s inclusion also marks the start of a new chapter under Jesus, who previously worked with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.

The new coach, however, said Ronaldo’s place in the starting lineup would depend on his performances rather than his reputation.

“His performance is what matters. The past doesn’t count,” Jesus said. “If he performs, he plays; if not, he doesn’t.”

Ronaldo is Portugal’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, having scored 146 international goals in 233 appearances.

Portugal will begin their Nations League campaign against Wales on September 24 before facing Norway and Denmark in their subsequent fixtures.

Jesus’ squad also includes Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, Vitinha, Rafael Leão and João Félix.
