India set sights on 300-run T20I

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has set a new target for the team—breaching the 300-run mark in T20 internationals.

Gambhir said India have the talent in their dressing room to achieve the landmark soon, pointing to the team’s aggressive batting approach and growing standards in the shortest format.

His comments came after India’s emphatic 127-run victory over Afghanistan in the third and final T20I on Thursday. Abhishek Sharma produced a sensational 30-ball century as India made a blistering start, scoring 100 runs in the Powerplay for the first time during Gambhir’s tenure. India eventually posted 221 for seven.

India’s highest T20I total remains 297 for six, scored against Bangladesh in Hyderabad in 2024. The team also posted 283 for one against South Africa in the same year.

Gambhir, however, said the focus inside the dressing room is not on individual milestones but on creating an impact with both bat and ball.

“T20 cricket is not about runs or wickets. It’s about how much impact you can create,” Gambhir said.

With India yet to cross the 300-run barrier in T20Is, the coach’s latest comments have put the landmark firmly on the team’s agenda.

For a side boasting considerable batting firepower, the challenge now is to turn that ambition into a record-breaking score.
