Pakistan's Central Police Office (CPO) has ended an operation in Kohat after eight militants were killed following a suicide bombing at a police headquarters mosque.

The CPO said in a statement on Saturday that the eight militants were killed in a joint operation by police and security forces. It claimed that all of them were members of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

A suicide bombing took place at a mosque at the police headquarters in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, during Friday prayers. The attack left 31 people dead and 103 others injured, including 22 police personnel and officers.

According to police, the attacker rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the entrance of the mosque during Friday prayers. The blast severely damaged part of the mosque and killed at least six attackers.

The TTP claimed responsibility for the attack several hours later.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hamid told Geo News that regular police, Elite Force commandos and several teams from the Counter Terrorism Department took part in the operation.

He said the mosque was located close to the main gate of the Kohat district court. Following the attack, all offices and district courts near police lines across the country were temporarily closed.

An indefinite state of emergency was also declared in Kohat district, he said. Police checkpoints were set up at all entry and exit points of the city, with the identities of everyone entering or leaving Kohat being checked.
