US extend Iran sanctions to 2031

US President Donald Trump has signed legislation extending the Iran Sanctions Act for another five years, keeping the law in force through 2031.

Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 on Friday (September 18). The legislation extends the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996, which was otherwise due to expire at the end of 2026.

The extension preserves a key legal framework for US sanctions targeting investment and business activities connected to Iran's energy sector, including areas related to petroleum and petrochemical production.

The new law also contains extensive measures targeting Russia, including sanctions on Russian officials, financial institutions and parts of its energy sector. It gives the US president authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on goods from certain major purchasers of Russian oil and gas.

The House of Representatives approved the legislation by 262-159 on September 16 after the Senate passed it in August. Trump subsequently signed it into law on September 18.

The five-year extension does not mean that all US sanctions against Iran have been extended under this single law. Other American sanctions on Tehran are based on separate laws, executive orders and regulations.
