Trump bans CNN, MS NOW, Politico from White House

US President Donald Trump has announced a ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, accusing the three news outlets of repeatedly publishing what he called “fake news.”
Trump made the announcement on Friday (September 18) in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, saying the ban would take effect immediately.
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW and Politico from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” Trump wrote.
He also accused the outlets of reporting “fiction and lies” about the US president, his administration and the country, and warned that other media outlets could face similar restrictions.
Trump also criticised Politico over government spending on subscriptions to the outlet during former President Joe Biden’s administration. He claimed that the government had spent $8 million on subscriptions and described the spending as “corruption.” Politico has rejected the claim, saying it is false and has been thoroughly debunked.
Later, when asked by reporters how the move was consistent with the First Amendment’s protection of a free press, Trump defended the decision by accusing the outlets of spreading false information.
He said he wanted the media to provide “fair and honest” coverage and indicated that the outlets could return to the White House if their reporting improved.
Trump also said the outlets “purposely write negative news” and claimed they were doing so to undermine Republicans and his administration.
CNN defended its journalists and said the network has a constitutional right to report from the White House without government interference.
“CNN stands fully behind our White House team and their fair and accurate reporting,” the network said in a statement, adding that implementing the threatened ban would be an “illegal assault” on constitutionally protected rights.
Politico also said it would continue to report on the White House and defend its First Amendment rights. MS NOW did not immediately issue a response, according to reports.
The exact scope and enforcement of the ban were initially unclear. Reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico were still working at the White House later on Friday, with no immediate indication that their press access had been revoked.
