A University of Chittagong student drowned in the Karnaphuli River in Rangamati’s Kaptai while he was washing his hands and face on Sunday. His body was recovered about three hours later.
The deceased was identified as Sajid Shahriar Sanam, 24, a final-year student of the university’s Computer Science and Engineering department. He was the son of Nasir Uddin from Raipura upazila of Narsingdi.
Kaptai Police Station OC Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan confirmed the incident.
According to police and local sources, a group of nine tourists from Narsingdi and Dhaka reached Kaptai around 10 AM and later went trekking in Sita Pahar with a local guide.
After completing the trek, the group went down to the Karnaphuli River at Pathorghata in Sitar Ghat to wash their hands and faces. Around 1:40 PM, Sanam was swept into deep water by the current.
Fire Service and Navy divers joined the rescue operation. His body was recovered around 4:40 PM after nearly three hours of searching.
