Messi’s Inter Miami eye MLS comeback against San Diego

Inter Miami will look to return to winning ways in MLS when they face San Diego in the 26th round early Monday, days after Lionel Messi helped the club win the Campeones Cup.

Messi scored and provided an assist in the final as Inter Miami won the trophy, taking his career tally to 48 titles.

The club, however, have won only one of their last seven MLS matches. Despite sitting second in the Western Conference with 45 points, they are nine points behind leaders Nashville, who have 54.

Inter Miami also dropped points against Nashville in their last league match, drawing 2-2 after conceding a late goal.

The match will also be important for coach Kylian Gonzalez, who will take charge of his first MLS game. He had previously been in the dugout for the first time during the Campeones Cup final against Cruz Azul.

San Diego are also struggling, having lost their last three matches. Inter Miami will look to take advantage of their opponents’ poor run and collect three points.

Messi is expected to join Argentina later for the upcoming international break. He will play for Inter Miami against San Diego before joining the national team for their friendly against Benin on October 6.

Inter Miami will also play Columbus Crew next Sunday during the international break.
