SRB gets charge of investigating first criminal case

The newly formed Special Response Battalion (SRB) has been assigned to investigate a criminal case for the first time since the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) was renamed.
A court has ordered the SRB to investigate a case filed over allegations of house grabbing, assault and extortion in Mirpur, Dhaka, and submit a report.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam issued the order on Sunday after recording the statement of the complainant.
The complainant is Md Mizanur Rahman alias Bachchu. The court assigned the investigation to the SRB following his complaint.
The court order said Section 10(c) of the SRB Act empowers the agency to take action against drugs, cybercrime, land-related offences and land grabbing. As the case concerns land, the SRB was assigned the investigation under the relevant provision of the law.
The order further said that under Section 15(2) of the SRB Act, the agency’s director general must assign an inspector or a senior officer to investigate the case and submit a report to the court.
The accused are Hemayet Uddin Sumon, Md Nazmul Hossain and Munni Akter Misty.
According to the case documents, Md Yunus Ali and Ms Ruma Akter, owners of a multistorey building in the Mirpur Housing Estate area, currently live in Canada. The complainant, Mizanur Rahman, their paternal uncle, is responsible for looking after and maintaining their immovable property in Bangladesh.
The complainant alleged that the accused had been attempting to occupy and misappropriate the house, taking advantage of the owners’ absence. On July 16, 2025, they allegedly entered the house forcibly, led by Hemayet Uddin Sumon, in an attempt to take control of the property.
The complaint further alleged that the accused threatened to kill Mizanur when he tried to resist. At one point, Hemayet Uddin Sumon allegedly demanded Tk 50 lakh from him as extortion.
When he refused to pay, the accused allegedly entered the house, vandalised it and took Tk 2 lakh, according to the complaint.
Following the court order, the SRB will investigate the case and submit its report to the court after completing the investigation.
