Police seek 7-day remand for MP Nazrul, wife

Police have petitioned a Dhaka court for a seven-day remand to interrogate Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife Maksuda Begum in connection with an abetment to suicide case.

Investigating Officer Sub-Inspector Shamsujjoha Sarkar of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station submitted the application, DMP prosecution officials confirmed on Monday (September 21). Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam will hold a hearing on the remand prayer.

Police arrested MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife following the recovery of his 19-year-old second wife Mariam Khatun's hanging body from Flat 203 at NAM Bhaban in Dhaka on Sunday. The victim's father, Md Masum Billah, filed the case naming MP Gazi Nazrul, his first wife Maksuda, and brother-in-law Obaidur Rahman as accused.

Earlier in July, video clips showing personal moments between Gazi Nazrul and Mariam surfaced on social media, triggering widespread criticism. Following an internal probe, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Gazi Nazrul from the party on July 22 under Article 62 of its constitution for moral turpitude and notified the Election Commission.

In connection with the video leak, driver and Mariam's uncle Obaidur Rahman filed a case against the MP at Pallabi Police Station on July 21 alleging assault and attempted murder. The High Court granted Gazi Nazrul eight-week anticipatory bail in that case on August 10. Obaidur now stands accused in the suicide abetment case.

According to the case statement, Mariam married MP Gazi Nazrul under Islamic Sharia in June through direct encouragement from Obaidur. She resided at the NAM Bhaban flat alongside her husband and his first wife. Mariam repeatedly informed her family via mobile phone about physical and mental torture inflicted by the duo.

On September 20 at around 5:30 PM, Gazi Nazrul phoned Mariam's father to come to the flat immediately. Upon arrival, he found crowds gathered and learned Mariam had locked herself inside a room. Police broke down the door to find her body hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf, alongside a handwritten suicide note on the bed. The father alleged his daughter committed suicide due to relentless torture and abetment by the accused.
