EC awaits JS letter on Gazi Nazrul’s MP status

The Election Commission is waiting for a formal letter from National Parliament before taking any decision on the membership of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, who was expelled by Jamaat-e-Islami two months ago.

EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the commission cannot take any action until it receives a formal reference from Jatiya Sangsad.

“There has been no letter from Parliament yet. Once we receive the letter, action will be taken according to the law,” he told reporters at his office at the Election Commission building on Monday.

Nazrul was expelled from Jamaat-e-Islami on 22 July after the party said an internal investigation found evidence of what it called moral misconduct.

The issue of his parliamentary membership came up again after police arrested him following the recovery of the hanging body of his second wife, Mariam from a flat at the National Parliament Complex area on Sunday evening.
