Mariam’s suicide notes speak of love, betrayal 

Police recovered several handwritten letters from the flat at NAM Bhaban in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar where the body of Mosammat Mariam Khatun, 19, the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, was found hanging.

The letters, written on National Parliament letterheads and plain paper, offer a glimpse into Mariam’s account of a troubled relationship. They refer to love, betrayal, alleged deception, emotional pain and her struggle to preserve her dignity.

In one of the notes, Mariam described feeling as though she had been used as a pawn in a relationship she had entered with trust.

“He said, ‘From today we are friends... let’s play a game.’ I agreed, believing him innocently. But who knew that I was the chess piece in your game?” she wrote.

In another note, she used the language of a battle to describe her experience.

“I entered the battle with him with complete trust, but I could not win and lost on the battlefield. How could I win? At the end of the battle, I found that you were the commander of the opposing side,” she wrote.

Mariam also wrote about the pain of sharing someone she believed should be wholly hers, saying that love was not something to be divided.

In another passage, she wrote that “losing someone is more dignified than having only half of them.”

The letters portray a young woman grappling with feelings of love, disappointment and betrayal, while trying to make sense of a relationship she apparently believed had changed.

The notes are being treated as Mariam’s personal writings and allegations, rather than established facts about the people or events she described. Police have yet to independently verify their contents, authenticity and the circumstances in which they were written.
