Fuel prices in Bangladesh recently increased following a government notification to align local rates with global market trends and reduce domestic subsidies.
Under the updated rates, diesel sells at BDT 135 per litre, kerosene at BDT 155, petrol at BDT 160, and octane at BDT 165. The sudden rise triggered negative impacts across transportation and commodity markets, placing added pressure on daily living costs.
Consumers and traders are closely monitoring comparative rates across South Asia as domestic discussions intensify. An analysis of official government data and local currency conversions as of Monday shows wide price gaps across the region.
In India, fuel prices vary by state. According to the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, petrol in New Delhi sells at INR 102.12 (approximately BDT 131) per litre, while diesel costs INR 95.20 (about BDT 122).
In Pakistan, prices fixed for the period ending September 21 listed petrol at PKR 389.14 (around BDT 172) per litre and high-speed diesel at PKR 424.04 (about BDT 188) per litre.
In Sri Lanka, official tariff lists from August 31 set petrol at LKR 399.00 (around BDT 147.6) per litre and auto diesel at LKR 382.00 (about BDT 141.3) per litre.
Nepal Oil Corporation lists petrol at NPR 175.00 (around BDT 140.3) per litre and diesel at NPR 165.00 (about BDT 132.3) per litre.
In Bhutan, post-subsidy rates in Thimphu stand at BTN 98 (about BDT 125) per litre for petrol and BTN 98.31 (around BDT 126) for diesel.
In the Maldives, state pricing lists set petrol at MVR 16.01 (about BDT 128) per litre and diesel at MVR 17.54 (around BDT 140) per litre.
In Afghanistan, uniform nationwide retail prices up to September 21 were unavailable on official portals. The Afghanistan Oil and Gas Corporation noted that local prices fluctuate due to international markets, transport costs, taxes, and exchange rates.
