PBI to investigate journalist’s theft case after police, DB probes

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has been ordered to conduct a further investigation into a theft case filed by journalist Mohammad Naimuddin after probes by Paltan police and the Detective Branch (DB) failed to identify or arrest those involved.
Naimuddin, a special correspondent of RisingBD.com and former hospitality secretary of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), filed the case over a burglary at his residence on DIT Extension Road in Paltan on October 14, 2023.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam passed the order on Tuesday following an application by the complainant and directed the PBI to submit its report by October 29.
Thieves allegedly took mobile phones, a laptop, cash and important documents worth more than Tk1 lakh from the residence.
Police later recovered a stolen mobile phone from a woman in Sandwip, Chattogram, but failed to determine how she obtained it or identify the thieves. Paltan police subsequently submitted a final report on January 27, 2025.
Following a no-confidence petition by Naimuddin, the court ordered the DB to conduct a further investigation. However, the DB also submitted a final report on February 28 without arresting any suspect or contacting the complainant, according to the petition.
The complainant alleged that the DB neither inspected the crime scene nor followed the previous court’s directions.
After hearing the petition, the court observed that further investigation was necessary and handed the case over to the PBI.
Naimuddin expressed disappointment over the earlier investigations and hoped the PBI would identify the organised theft ring and bring those responsible to justice.
