Ex-MP Mita, driver sent to remand

A Dhaka court has granted six days’ remand for former Chattogram-3 MP Mahfuzur Rahman Mita and five days for his driver Golam Mawla Selim in an Anti-Terrorism Act case.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam passed the order on Tuesday after a hearing.

DB police Inspector Md Masudur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, produced the two accused before the court and sought 10 days’ remand for each.

Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki argued in favour of the remand on behalf of the state. Defence lawyer Md Atiqur Rahman Khan sought cancellation of the remand and bail for the accused.

According to the remand petition, the accused allegedly organised an illegal procession with leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League near Mohakhali Bus Terminal, raised anti-state slogans and exploded cocktails with the aim of creating instability in the country.

Police said the accused needed to be interrogated to uncover the alleged planning behind the activities, identify and arrest other absconding accused, and determine the source of illegal cocktails and bombs allegedly in their possession.

According to the case details, an illegal procession was held and cocktails were exploded by leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations near Mohakhali Bus Terminal in Tejgaon Industrial Area at around 9:50 AM on June 18.

Mita, a former MP from the Chattogram-3 (Sandwip) constituency and executive member of the banned Awami League’s Chattogram North unit, and his driver were arrested in the case filed with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
