Cyclone Arnab: When and where it might strike

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast when and where a weather system over the Bay of Bengal could make landfall if it develops into a cyclone named Arnab.

A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a deep depression, according to the IMD. It is expected to move west-northwestwards and cross the North Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coast between the night of September 23 and the early hours of September 24, Hindustan Times reported.

According to the latest IMD data, as of 8:30 AM on Tuesday (September 22), the system was located over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal. It was about 200 km southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha, 200 km east-southeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 210 km south of Puri and 290 km east of Visakhapatnam.

The weather department said the system is likely to intensify into a deep depression within the next 12 hours. It is then expected to move west-northwestwards and cross the North Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is expected in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, with some areas likely to receive up to 20 cm of rain. Wind speeds could reach 55-65 kmph from Tuesday evening.

Schools and Anganwadi centres in several districts of Odisha have been ordered to remain closed due to the threat of heavy rain.

However, the IMD has not yet classified the system as a cyclone. If it develops into a cyclone in the North Indian Ocean, it will be named ‘Arnab’, a name proposed by Bangladesh.

In other words, the name ‘Cyclone Arnab’ will only be used if the system intensifies into a cyclone.
