Student opens fire near Turkey high school, 11 wounded

A student opened fire in front of a high school in Turkey’s western province of Manisa on Tuesday, wounding at least 11 other pupils, Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said.
Two of the wounded were in critical condition, Gurlek said. The assailant was arrested, while the suspect’s mother, father and grandfather — who owned the weapon used in the attack — were also detained.
“When the security of our children is the issue, it is not possible for any negligence, any irresponsibility to be overlooked,” the minister said on X.
Gurlek said authorities were investigating how the child obtained the gun, how the weapon was stored, the parents’ responsibilities regarding care and supervision, and allegations that the student had been bullied before the incident.
Images and videos posted online showed a male figure walking on a street near the school carrying a rifle before running away. Footage outside the school showed police keeping families and others away from the premises.
The motive for the attack was not immediately clear.
The local governor’s office said the shooting took place at around 8 AM at the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Turgutlu district of Manisa.
Two deadly school shootings in April caused outrage in Turkey and prompted authorities to introduce additional security measures for the 2026-27 academic year, including tighter gun controls.
Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz said Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci and Education Minister Yusuf Tekin were travelling to Manisa to conduct inspections.
