Jamaat Amir slams govt over constitutional crisis and fuel prices

Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Shafiqur Rahman criticized the BNP-led government on Wednesday (September 23), alleging it is overly focused on taking credit rather than addressing public grievances.

Speaking to journalists during a view-exchange meeting in the capital's Moghbazar, the Jamaat chief stated that the government remains preoccupied with self-praise while everyday problems persist. He attributed the political crisis to ruling party MPs failing to take oaths regarding constitutional reform.

Shafiqur noted that parliamentary limitations hinder meaningful discussion on critical national issues. He called for a constructive parliamentary debate on rising fuel prices to find joint solutions involving both government and opposition benches.

Dismissing government remarks regarding opposition long marches as irresponsible, the Jamaat chief stressed that the administration must act more responsibly to attract domestic and foreign investment.

Addressing proposed salary increases under the new pay scale and benefits for lawmakers, Shafiqur affirmed that Jamaat, as an opposition party, will refrain from accepting additional perks during the ongoing economic crisis.

He also clarified that receiving official housing provided to opposition leaders is distinct from taking land plots, as the property remains state-owned rather than transferred to personal ownership.
